The Ultimate Board-Game Setup Arrives on Kickstarter on December 2nd

We began creating furniture for board game players with the straightforward question: what would it take to make game night seamless, from setup to storage to the instant you shut the lid and start over the next day? A single product isn't the solution. A table designed for play, shelves that safeguard each box, and accessories that maintain your surface's composure when the battle becomes chaotic are all part of the system.

That system—the Ironside HEX Table, GameKeep Storage Shelves, and a line of complementary accessories—will be available on Kickstarter on November 25. This article delves deeply into the rationale behind each design, the issues they address that you have most likely discovered the hard way, and how everything works in actual homes.

1. Ironside HEX Table - Why the Table Is the Start of a Better Game Night

1) Constructed to resemble actual furniture

You should have a comfortable game table in your house all the time, not just on game nights.  For this reason, the Ironside HEX has a solid rubberwood tabletop for warmth and beauty and a steel frame for durability and rigidity.  The hardwood top is strong enough to withstand decades of use and is simple to refinish if you ever want to change the appearance. The metal understructure resists flex and racking over time.  In order to complement your space rather than compete with it, we finish the top in three different tones: Royal Cherry, Opulent Oak, and Noble Walnut.

2) You won't want to live without the recessed play area.

The importance of a sunken game area is obvious to anyone who has ever lost a token in the carpet or watched dice skitter off the edge.  The recessed surface of the HEX serves two purposes simultaneously:

  •  Keeps the dice and pieces contained.  You are free to roll around without keeping an eye on the table's edge.
  •  Enhances privacy and sightlines.  Players can hold their hands closer to the rail without revealing cards because the play bed is lower than the rails. This reduces unintentional "sneak peeking" and increases concentration on the game.

The end effect is a more serene and engaging table where the play state remains precisely where you want it to be—on the table.

3) Made for a large gathering

In order to provide six players with ample elbow room to manage their own tableaus and shared boards, we shaped the Ironside HEX so that they could sit naturally around the perimeter.  No one is confined to a "bad seat," and corners don't feel claustrophobic.  This is more important than you might think if your group switches hosts because a table designed for six people makes everyone's game run more smoothly.

4) Rail system + accessories: a neat edge is preferable to a messy top

Game tables frequently break on the edges rather than the surface.  Tokens, player aids, and drinks swarm the field of play, only to be knocked over when someone reaches across.  You can modify the arrangement to suit the game by sliding accessories along the perimeter with our universal magnetic rail:

  •  The playmat is protected from condensation by cup holders.
  •  Dice trays and magnetic bowls are located just outside the board, accessible but out of the way.
  •  As you draft, build engines, or swap resources, component trays follow you around.

Everything repositions and docks with ease.  The surface remains immaculate.

5) Topper panels that are useful during dinner

Some tables only cover the game; the topper panels on the Ironside HEX serve two purposes.  When you pop them off, they can be used as side tables for drinks, snacks, or organizing and minis.  You get usable horizontal space without touching the play area, as opposed to having to balance a bowl of chips on the armrest or stop to clear the entire table.  Cover the table when it's time to take a nightly break and start up at the same location the following day.

6) A surface for playing cards and minis

For the HEX bed, we include a 3 mm neoprene playmat cut, which is smooth for sliding and shuffling and has just enough traction to keep stacks in place.  Cleaning is as easy as a quick roll and dust-off, minis sit flat, and tiles don't drift.

7) Why a hex?

In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the geometry provides balanced seating and shorter reach distances.  The board is centered in relation to each player because everyone sits on an edge rather than a corner.  The first time you deal, it feels surprisingly natural.

2. GameKeep Storage Shelves — Your Collection, Flat, Safe, and Grab-Ready

Game-night friction is resolved by a great table.  The majority of frustration, however, begins before you even sit down: the archeological dig to locate expansion , towers of boxes, and crushed lids.  Our solution to the storage mess that gamers silently tolerate is called GameKeep.

🛒 Learn More

1) The issue with vertical stacks

Vertical box stacking works best in warehouses, not homes.  The next time you open your favorite game, you'll see a confetti storm of parts as boxes slide, lids loosen, and inserts lift.  Additionally, warp boards and bottom boxes are crushed by heavy stacks.  In the end, you do more reorganization than play.

2) Flat, horizontal, and accurate

GameKeep is designed to be stored flat.  Not perched on a corner, each box is perfectly level and supported across its base.  This alone stops warping and lid tumbling.  However, we went one step further: shelves can be adjusted to provide precise, tight clearances, making it easy to grab your boxes without them slipping when you slide them back.  You can adjust heights for the majority of collections to correspond with typical box families:

  •  7.5 cm, or about 3".
  •  11.5 cm (approximately 4.5")
  •  16 cm, or roughly 6.25"

99% of game sizes find a comfortable, rattle-free home with those settings (and minor tweaks in between).

3) No more stationary shelves or unsteady stacks

Conventional bookshelves weren't designed with board games in mind; fixing holes forces you to make space-wasting concessions.  The slide-and-lock shelves at GameKeep can be adjusted in a matter of seconds.  There won't be any shimming or "good enough" alignment; instead, you'll feel the shelf click into pre-set holes, seat completely, and lock flush.  The shelves don't move once they're in place.  You can grab what you need without having to unstack a Jenga tower because each box has its own bay.

4) Infinite configurations, two heights

GameKeep and game rooms are not one-size-fits-all.  Select:

  •  Compact living ready, this 60 cm height is perfect for sideboards, apartments, and under windows.
  •  The showcase edition, measuring 90 cm in height, adds more "wow," presence, and capacity.

Each unit is 40 cm deep and 120 cm wide.  Do you want more?  Stack vertically (90 + 60) to create a feature wall, or use extension modules to extend from 120 cm to 177.5 cm.  The system expands with your collection, regardless of your preference for a space-saving tower or a display arrangement with the items side by side at 177.5 cm each.

5) Pegboard sides that work with IKEA

Popular IKEA accessories are compatible with the side panels.  Cups for tokens and pens, clip-on hooks for player bags, or note pads for campaign logs.  It's a living room version of a workshop pegboard.  It's a station where setup starts even before the box is placed on the table, so it's not just a place to store stuff.

 6) Quick assembly and significant strength

The build involves sliding the shelves into the pre-cut tracks and locking them.  The steel structure behind the simplicity maintains its rigidity under full load.  Without the bowing found on wooden bookshelves, we created GameKeep to accommodate contemporary collections, ranging from compact card games to expansive coffin boxes.  It's not a decorative rack; it's storage furniture.

 7) How horizontal storage changes the way you play

You can choose right away because each box has its own bay. You can see the spines, step in, and pull cleanly without moving three boxes on top.  The time saved adds up: it's easier to set up, easier to pack up, and you're more likely to grab the game you want instead of the one that's easy to get to.  That's the point: less friction and more play.

Stacking boxes might work in warehouses — not homes. Slipping lids, crushed inserts, and warped boxes destroy organization and joy.

3. Accessories — Little Things, Big Calm

A table and shelves fix the big problems, and accessories fix the little ones that get in the way during a tight round.

🛒 See Accessories

 1) Bowls, trays, and cup holders with magnets

The universal magnetic rail is included with every Ironside HEX. This lets accessories slide to where you need them and stay out of the way when you don't.  The component bowls are just off the edge, the dice trays keep the noise down and the rolls in check, and the cup holders protect the playmat and your cards.  The difference isn't clear until you try to put a drink on a crowded edge. Then you see why rails are important.

 2) Side table-converting toppers

Horizontal space is crucial during protracted campaigns.  Our toppers can be used as staging spaces or as side tables for snacks.  The food and reference materials have their own surfaces, so keep the table tidy and the game state unchanging.

  3) Playmats that have a proper feel

The offered 3 mm neoprene mat strikes the ideal balance between grip and glide.  It is sized precisely to prevent edges from curling under the rail, is easy on the sleeves, and is suitable for minis.

  4) Made to expand along with you

We can keep adding modules without affecting compatibility because the table and shelves are both systems.  Consider speciality trays, card rails, or lighting to ensure your setup is future-proof without needing a new table every few years.

4. How It All Works Together

🛒 Explore the Ecosystem

Imagine spending a night on the Ironside HEX with six players.  Dice bounce safely inside the recessed bed, bowls slide to your spot during your turn, player areas flank the rail, and the board rests in the center.  Nothing is in danger when the doorbell rings: the cards are hidden from the table, the tiles are not floating, and the drinks are in holders.  Put the topper panels on when dinner arrives, move a few aside to serve as side tables, and resume the session without having to restart after dessert.

GameKeep now displays your collection horizontally with labels out when you pan to the wall.  Using one hand, you pull the desired box.  Nothing scrapes or collapses.  Each expansion box has its own bay.  When you're finished, the game fits perfectly and returns to its original location.  Because of the ecosystem—table, shelves, and accessories—every aspect of the evening is set up for success.
